As far as I'm concerned, the Black Album was their downfall. Don't get me wrong....I still love the Black Album. At least these songs are something I can look forward to watching them play live. I can't say the same for Load, Reload & St. Anger (which was just a shame). Death Magnetic is their best release in years. Lets be honest with ourselves.....we won't see anything like the Master of Puppets era ever again, but this is the best that we can hope for. My favorite song on here is "All Nightmare Long." They threw in a few good, "old school" thrash riffs that are half-decent. I definately recommend this album with an open listening heart. I loved it at first listen, but some of my friends took a while to get into it. Give it a few tries and it grows on you. METAL UP YOUR....!!! Rating: - Classic Metallica Has Made Its ReturnFinally, after more than a decade a taste of the old Metallica. Anyone who is from the old needs to pick up this album. Right from the start it lures you in and doesn't let you go without the impact. "It's about time boys, welcome back!!" Rating: - Long Time Fan (Back when stuff was on Cassette, kids ask your parents)First off let me get this right out of the way, Death Magnetic rocks! It clearly demonstrates that Metallica's passion for heavy music has not diminished over these 20+ years of recording. In some way this fully completes the bands metamorphosis that began with St. Anger and returns them to their roots musically but retains the "fresher" and more personal style of lyric writing that James Hetfield has employed since St. Anger. Pros -- Solo's have returned (Kirk Hammet is better than ever) -- Songs leave room for extended riffs and breaks -- Lars drum sound has improved since St. Anger -- Robert Trujillo is a masterful addition to the band who makes his presence felt all over this record -- First ever appearance of a Piano track on a studio album (it does not suck) -- There is an instrumental on this record, much like Kill'em All, ...and Justice For All, and Master Of Puppets Cons -- The mastering/sound quality of this album is awful in places and "not bad" in others. "The Day That Never Comes" sounds worse the longer you listen to it, no matter what media/format you play it on. Overall this is a "Neo-Classic" Metal album that I am not ashamed to put up their with the likes of "Master of Puppets" and "...and Justice For All". I consider it a must have for any lover of Heavy music, or a lover of any music for that matter, well maybe not Polka. Rating: - I miss the old sound (mix)I'm really torn about this album... Shall I like it or not? It is raw, fast and definitely reminding me about the early Metallica, the one I came to love. However, in comparison with the Kill'em all - Master of Puppets era, many of these songs just seem way too "thick" and too long for how heavy they are. I think that's partly because the mix sounds "very close". They had more hall in the stated early albums, making the heavy sound more atmospheric and easier to deal with. On DM, the sound of the fast songs actually makes me tired in a way that I'm relived, once the song ends. That's not good! Melodies are here, but they don't stick in my mind as long as those on the above stated albums. Good to hear Kirk making solos again, but since a couple of years he's been using that wah-pedal way too much for my taste live, and it's the same on that album. I believe I should just be thankful that these guys still manage to bring out albums with such power and I should just get over the fact that we & them are not in the 80's anymore. I do appreciate Metallica's attitude of making the music they currently feel like doing and that they don't simply play what their fans expect, while still playing for us despite their "advanced" age and wealth. My dream would still be that the next album would sound like a mix of their first 3 albums, but I guess this just ain't possible (anymore). To me, one of the biggest unanswered questions ever really is: how would Metallica sound today if Cliff was still here? Rating: - Metallica For EverMetallica recover their roots, have returned to their style, Death Magnetic makes me remember the Master of Puppets and the ... And Justice For All, Metallica hopefully follow this path and will last much longer. tnks Metallica Death Magnetic ReviewsMore reviews:Buy Death Magnetic Sale Reviews Deals
